LONDON WALK:
THE WEST END WANDERER
Curated Walk with Artist, David Blamey
(Time: 5 hours with lunch break, Price: £20.00)
This guided tour will move between David Blamey’s home in Vauxhall to Mayfair in the West End – an area considered one of the most important art hubs in the UK. Participants will meet at DB’s office for coffee and introductions at 10.00am both days.
Traversing the boundary between the ‘art world’ and the ‘real world’, the journey will take the form of a matrix of interconnecting scenes that showcase art within the context of everyday life. Moments of contemplation, inspiration, imagination, reverie and distraction will be sought by tactically digressing from the art experience.
Stopping points along the way will be selected from current exhibitions at the Cork Street commercial galleries; White Cube; Hauser & Wirth; Sadie Coles; The Marlborough Gallery; and Stephen Friedman as well exhibits in permanent collections, such as Tate Britain’s Art Now display; Monet’s Water-Lilies painting at the National Gallery; the Institute of Contemporary Art; and the Smithson’s Economist Building in St James’. These conventional art exchanges will be punctuated by encounters with the city’s wider cultural landscape. Options include: English perfumers DR Harris, Penhaligon’s and Geo F Trumper; Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market; a Quaker meeting; window-shopping in Savile Row; record shops; and London’s oldest wine merchant and cheese shop.
In both structure and sentiment this trip echoes Baudelaire’s idea that the flâneur is uniquely positioned to understand the city as a wandering participant observer, but here the idea is applied with equal measure to the art world. A short list of six stopping points will be tailored for each of the two days. Other recommendations will be made for the afternoon and every participant will receive a personal recommendation at the end of the tour.
David Blamey is a London-based Artist, occasional Curator and Writer, proprietor of independent publishing imprint Open Editions and an influential educator at the Royal College of Art.
His work includes assemblages of commonplace materials such as avocados, shelving systems, rubber bands, ball bearings, projected pin pricks and frames of light, a chalk line pinged onto a wall, ‘empty’ notice boards that resemble constellations of stars, torn flags and audio projects made with field recordings or spoken words. As diverse as they might seem, these works are connected by an intense focus on things that have become so familiar that they often go ignored. Through acts of repetition and re-presentation his minimal installations have the effect of being strangely life affirming, even in the process of arguing for a different order of the world. http://www.davidblamey.com/ and http://www.openeditions.com/
